Life & Legacy
William 'Bill' Hazel crafted a vibrant life marked by infectious energy, deep affections for the outdoors, and an unyielding spirit that turned every challenge into an opportunity for joy and connection.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, Bill embraced the world with a zest that drew people in. A graduate of Lawrence North High School, he filled his days with pursuits that celebrated freedom and adventure—whether hosting lively gatherings, savoring fine meals, or exploring distant shores. Boating became his passion, a way to merge with the water's rhythm, while beaches offered endless horizons for reflection. Even as health constraints reshaped his world, Bill's enthusiasm endured; he found delight in modest pleasures, fiercely guarding his autonomy with remarkable resilience. Nature held a special place in his heart, from cherished feline companions who grew old under his care to the wild creatures that caught his eye. His bond with Gracie, an spirited Rough Coat Collie who joined him as a pup, blossomed into a profound companionship of mutual devotion and playful spats, lasting over eight years until she found a new home through Tri State Collie Rescue.
Bill's professional journey with GAP Inc. began humbly as seasonal staff at Washington Square Mall, but his natural charisma with customers propelled him into corporate roles. He spearheaded store openings in emerging markets, with a standout tenure in Chicago where he helped establish key locations, including pioneering outlets for the up-and-coming GAP Kids line.

Bill poured his generous spirit into the relationships that anchored him, from doting on his mother Myrna and stepfather Marvin, to sharing laughs with brother Bryan and his wife Kim, and sister Amy alongside her husband Rich. His pride shone brightest with his nieces Shelby—who with Drew raises Olivia, John, Elanor, and Lincoln—and Kara with Josh, plus nephew Clayton, all of whom felt his unwavering encouragement. Preceded by his father Arman, grandparents John and Geneva Bolinger, grandmother Shirley Stone, and life partner William Sterms, Bill remained a steadfast son, sibling, uncle, and companion whose warmth fostered enduring family ties.
