Life & Legacy

Born in Akron, Ohio, to William T. and Geraldine Sassano DeCapua, Byron built a remarkable journey marked by academic excellence, athletic passion, and profound spiritual commitment. A graduate of Broad Ripple High School in 1953 and Butler University in 1957 with a degree in business administration, he excelled as Senior Class Vice President and Kappa Sigma fraternity member. There, he met his lifelong partner, Carole Jane Simon, forging a 67-year marriage filled with shared adventures and family milestones. From early days in Indianapolis at Christ the King and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Churches, to settling in Zionsville at St. Alphonsus Liguori, Byron's faith anchored his life. He served in the Indiana Army National Guard, volunteered extensively with organizations like Right to Life, SEARCH, St. Vincent de Paul, Wheeler Mission, and Salvation Army, taught CCD, participated in Cursillo retreats, and rose to Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus. An avid sportsman, he coached countless youth teams in baseball, softball, and football, ran family Mini-Marathons, cheered the Indy 500 since the 1950s, and mastered golf as a scratch player. Proud of his Italian roots, he delved into genealogy, gardened, hammocked in the sun, and turned everyday chores into cherished memories with hotdog roasts and handmade ice cream.

Family & Loved Ones

William Byron DeCapua's legacy lives on through their family and loved ones:

  • The heart of Byron's world was his family of 67 years with Carole. He raised eight children—Sherry Perry (Jack), Karen Scheitlin (Gordon), William 'Jeffery' (Gayla), Dennis, Greg, Matt (Reina), Mary Kaster, and Laura (Phil Dimond)—nurturing 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren (sixth forthcoming). Predeceased by parents Bill and Gerry, and brother Calvin, Byron captivated grandchildren with witty, wisdom-filled tales. Family camping trips to beaches and mountains, pool games where he reigned as 'shark,' competitive board games, and playful rewards after chores like leaf-raking or berry-picking defined his loving, fun-filled approach to parenthood and grandparenthood.

Remembered by Friends & Family

In the days and weeks after their passing, messages of love, support, and remembrance flowed in from friends, family, and colleagues. The themes that emerged were clear and consistent.

Friends and family recall Byron as a genuinely good, loving man whose humor, stories, and warmth captivated children and adults alike; they celebrate his extraordinary life of faith, family devotion, and service, offering prayers and cherishing his enduring legacy.
