Life & Legacy
W. Thomas 'Tom' Schemmel crafted a vibrant life marked by infectious enthusiasm, unwavering faith, and a commitment to uplifting those around him, from his Iowa roots to his enduring home in Zionsville, Indiana.
Hailing from the small town of Ryan, Iowa, Tom blossomed into a community fixture early on, lending his musical talents on piano and voice at local celebrations and services. Those formative days behind the counter of his father's drugstore honed his natural gregariousness and eagerness to assist. Venturing to Marquette University, he secured a History degree in 1960 and crossed paths with Ellen Roche, the partner who would share his journey for over six decades. Their path led to Zionsville, where they wove themselves into the fabric of parish life at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church—Tom contributing as a compelling lector, Rosary devotee, and leader in the Knights of Columbus, including as Charter Grand Knight. A fierce defender of life's sanctity, he championed causes with fervor. His military chapter from 1963 to 1967 included Vietnam service with the Military Assistance Advisory Group, earning him the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Back home, he rallied fellow Knights to comfort veterans at the Roudebush VA Medical Center. An explorer at heart, Tom reveled in the outdoors—angling, pursuing game, gliding down slopes, navigating waters, and nurturing wildlife—while jetting off with Ellen to far-flung spots. A die-hard supporter of the Indianapolis Colts and Marquette Golden Eagles, he lit up rooms with tales, wit, and readiness to help.
Tom forged an illustrious path in life insurance and annuities, clinching sales accolades and attaining qualifying and life membership in the Million Dollar Round Table. He guided The General Agent's and Manager's Association of Indianapolis as a member and president. Beyond business, his civic footprint included steering the Board of Directors and presidency at United Cerebral Palsy of Central Indiana, advising the St. Vincent Hospital Stress Center Board, and contributing to Zionsville School Board initiatives, notably the construction of a new school.
