Life & Legacy

Sue Potasnik mastered life with the same bold confidence she brought to the card table, turning every challenge into a winning play and leaving behind a trail of cherished connections and fearless decisions.

Born into humble surroundings in Saginaw, Michigan, Sue embraced adventure early on, graduating from Arthur Hill High School in 1956 before pursuing nursing at St. Mary's Hospital School. Her nursing school tales, filled with cheeky escapades like sneaking out in rolled-up pants, captivated her grandchildren for years. By 1959, she emerged as a registered nurse, forging bonds with classmates that endured a lifetime. Fearless and strategic, Sue navigated her path across states, yet Carmel, Indiana, captured her spirit like no other place.

Sue's professional journey extended far beyond bedside care. She broke barriers as one of the earliest women in local politics, serving on the Carmel City Council from 1980 to 1988—where she rose to president in 1983—and on the Plan Commission through 1991. Her commitment to community shone through regular volunteering at the Friends Library Bookstore in the Carmel Clay Public Library, blending her sharp mind with a generous heart.

Family & Loved Ones

Sue orchestrated her household with the precision of a master dealer, enforcing rules against complaints, shortcuts, or theatrics while fostering rituals that knit her loved ones closer. Grandchildren treasured 'Grandma Sue' days of indulgent sweets, fresh toys, and undivided attention from an adult who hung on their every word. Late July escapes to the Northern Michigan cottage blended dockside supervision with unbeatable euchre matches, where she tracked their interests, friends, and growth through marathon phone chats that stretched far beyond quick hellos. Evenings at Woodland Country Club or local spots stretched long, as her magnetic presence drew greetings and expanded circles of talk around cheese, nuts, and her commanding wing chair.

Remembered by Friends & Family

Tributes from across Sue's wide network echo her unbeatable spirit at cards and in conversation, celebrating a woman whose commanding presence and fair play left indelible marks on every gathering.
