Born in the vibrant city of Chicago to Dixie and James Spiller, Steve spent his early years in Matteson, Illinois, shaping a strong foundation through local roots. After earning his high school diploma from Rich South High School in 1984, he ventured to Carmel in 1986, where he planted deep ties in the community. His path forward blended hard work with bold initiatives, reflecting a man who thrived on creating opportunities for himself and others.
Steve's professional journey showcased his knack for construction and development. He honed his skills at Langston Development before launching Spiller Excavating in 1991, steering it successfully until 2002. In 2016, he founded Simplicity Contracting, partnering closely with his son Andrew to grow the venture right up to his final days, demonstrating resilience and a passion for the trade.
Family & Loved Ones
Steve poured his energy into nurturing bonds that spanned generations, from tender moments with his mother Dixie to guiding his five children—Steven Jr., Carllie (married to Tyler Kroes), Andrew, Colleen, and Cayllie—through life's ups and downs. His two brothers, David and James (with Shelbie), shared in the camaraderie of sibling ties, while close friend Sarah Cranor stood by his side as a steadfast companion. Though his father James R. Spiller and grandparents Connie & Ila Dean Spiller, Roy & Dora Evans had passed before him, Steve's home remained a hub of warmth and support.
