Life & Legacy
Steven John Semling crafted a life rich with humor, culinary creativity, and unwavering loyalty to family and friends, leaving behind a trail of shared meals, dad jokes, and cherished connections that defined his vibrant spirit.
Born in Merrill, Wisconsin, to Donald and June Semling, Steve grew into a man whose daily rituals brought delight to those around him. His passion for grocery shopping earned him the affectionate nickname 'Mr. Costco,' as he roamed multiple stores in pursuit of top-quality ingredients. These outings fueled his talent in the kitchen, where he whipped up beloved dishes like chicken soup and perfectly grilled pork roast, ensuring no visitor departed empty-handed. A lifelong Green Bay Packers enthusiast, he soaked up the excitement of live games whenever possible. Steve's playful wit shone through in his signature silly jokes, often shared over the phone just to spark a laugh, while his generous heart and compassionate nature made him a pillar of kindness in every circle he touched.
Steve honorably served three years in the U.S. Army Corps as a rifle sharpshooter, receiving the National Defense Service Medal. The bonds he forged with fellow soldiers endured a lifetime, as he nurtured those friendships with steady contact and fond reminiscences.
Family & Loved Ones
Steve poured his heart into a 55-year marriage with Sharon Semling, building a home filled with warmth and flavorful feasts. As a doting father to Jodi McConnell and Justin Semling, he reveled in their company, and his bond with granddaughter Carly June McConnell sparkled with special grandfatherly magic. Siblings like Donna Hertel, Andrew and Renee Semling, Dave and Peggy Semling, Sara Semling with Tom Horsley, and Connie Semling, along with sister-in-law Sarah Semling and a host of nieces and nephews, formed the extended network he held dear, though he mourned the earlier losses of brothers Dan and Matt.
