Life & Legacy
Sherry A. Baker crafted a life rich with faith, family adventures, and joyful pursuits, leaving an indelible mark on her loved ones through decades of devoted teaching, spirited travels, and unwavering spiritual guidance.
Born in Anderson, Indiana, to John Roberts Benson and Lois Eileen (Wampole) Powell, Sherry grew up embracing a vibrant path that blended education, deep faith, and endless exploration. She pursued higher learning at Ball State University's Teachers College, earning a BS that fueled her passion for nurturing young minds. Her days were filled with outdoor escapades alongside her husband Bob, from tennis courts to golf courses, and far-flung journeys to Italy and Ireland, savoring scenery, cuisine, and local brews. The couple cherished their second home in Naples, Florida, during winters and a historic cottage in New London, New Hampshire, in summers. Sherry's anchor was her profound Christian commitment—she immersed herself in Scripture study, journaling reflections, and leading Bible groups, particularly at Creative Living, where she drew in women statewide and even introduced her young grandchildren to Jesus through engaging classes.
Sherry's professional journey centered on education and mentorship, beginning as a preschool teacher, advancing to grade-school aide and classroom instructor, and culminating in dedicated homeschooling for her two children. Beyond formal roles, she served as an unpaid legal assistant and poured her energies into freelance and organized Bible studies, inspiring countless women with her teachings on faith across Indiana schools and communities.
