Born in Kingsport, Tennessee, Sam embarked on a journey filled with adventure and warmth. A natural storyteller, he captivated audiences with tales from his past, especially his enthusiasm for automobiles. Never shy around newcomers, he turned acquaintances into friends effortlessly, infusing every interaction with his boundless energy and zest for living.

Sam earned a BA in English and a Master's in Christian Education from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1960. He dedicated his professional life to safety engineering as a manager at Aetna Life and Casualty, contributing his expertise across offices in Spartanburg, South Carolina; Hartford, Connecticut; and Indianapolis, Indiana.

Cherished moments with loved ones defined Sam's world, where his quick wit and affectionate nature shone brightest during family gatherings. He shared 65 joyful years with his devoted wife, Barbara Capilos Reams, nurturing their children—Debbie Reams, Jackie (Reams) De Vaney and her husband Craig L. De Vaney Sr., and Samuel Hunter Reams III—along with grandchildren Zachary T. Speckman (and spouse Brooke), Craig L. De Vaney Jr., Kent H. De Vaney (and spouse Victoria), and Jesse S. De Vaney, plus four great-grandchildren. Though he mourned the loss of daughter Mary Elizabeth 'Libby' Reams, brother Franklin L. 'Frank' Reams, and granddaughter Casey Nicole Speckman, his home remained a haven of laughter and enduring support.
