Life & Legacy

Roger Wayne Skinner crafted a life of unwavering integrity, fervent faith, and joyful connections, leaving an indelible mark on his family, community, and the insurance world through decades of mentorship, leadership, and selfless service.

From his early days in Seymour, Indiana, and upbringing in North Vernon, Roger nurtured a profound pride in his Jennings County heritage. A 1967 graduate of North Vernon High School, he pursued higher education at Indiana University Bloomington, securing a Bachelor of Science in Insurance in 1971. As a devoted IU alumnus, he cheered the Hoosiers throughout his years. Roger's passions extended to the golf links, where he was a longstanding member of Maple Creek Golf and Country Club since 1974, relishing annual 'boys' camping trips to Cherry Park in North Vernon, nationwide travels to scenic courses, and cherished moments like witnessing his boyhood friend 'Spider' compete in the Masters tournament twice. A perpetual student at heart, he championed education and growth, embodying a caretaker spirit by offering guidance, assistance, and presence to all, earning the affectionate title 'Uncle Roger' across his circles.

Launching his professional journey in 1971 as a group sales representative at Principal, Roger amassed a reputation for expertise, commitment, and ethical standards, steadfastly consulting until his last days. In 1980, he established Specialized Benefit Plans, a thriving group brokerage, before acquiring Hoosier Dental Plans in 1992 with partners, evolving it into GroupLink—a prominent national third-party administration entity sold in 2004. Post-sale, he advised major marketing firms, holding prestigious credentials like CLU, RHU, and REBC. As a founding pillar of the Indiana State Association of Health Underwriters (ISAHU), he served actively for decades, culminating as PAC Administrator, inspiring peers nationwide with his guidance and advocacy for principled practices.

Family & Loved Ones

Roger's world revolved around the unbreakable ties he nurtured with those closest to him, from his wife of 55 years, Janice—his 'Cuddle Bunny'—to daughters Jennifer (Craig) Mitchen and Julie (Bob) Eisenmann, sister Patti Smith, grandchildren Eleanor and Evelyn Mitchen, Gina Herron, and Aimee Eisenmann, plus great-grandchildren Stevie and Cameron Herron, and beloved pets Hope and Frankie. Predeceased by brothers William, Robert, and Richard, he immersed himself as a devoted grandfather, handling diaper changes, spill cleanups, and work absences for babysitting duties. His faith anchored him as a lifelong Mt. Comfort Church member, leadership team participant, treasurer, and Bible Study Fellowship leader; a proud Mason, steadfast Republican, Lawrence Republican Club affiliate, and poll worker who championed civic duty.

Remembered by Friends & Family

Echoes from Roger's wide network capture a man whose humor lit up rooms, whose generosity knew no bounds, and whose steadfast presence made him the go-to confidant for advice and support in every season.
