Life & Legacy
Robert T. Carroll Sr. carved a path of unyielding strength, infectious humor, and profound family devotion, leaving an indelible mark as a man who turned hardships into triumphs and faith into his guiding light.
Born in 1942 to Odie B. Carroll and John S. Carroll, Robert faced early loss when his father passed from a respiratory infection at age 3. Raised by his devoted mother, aunts, and older sisters Willa Mae Jones and Beatrice Williams—who both preceded him in death—he learned resilience young, helping in homes with cooking, errands, and cleaning. Nicknamed the General, Granddaddy, or Uncle Bobby, he embodied a no-nonsense spirit blended with warmth, humor, and passion. In his later years, a hospital visit in September 2024 led to a transformative recommitment to Christ alongside his sister, daughter, and son-in-law at Phillips Temple CME Church. Scriptures like Joel 3:10 and Isaiah 40:29 became his nightly anchors, fostering peace amid trials. His journey inspired healthcare teams and family alike, culminating in a final tender moment with his daughter, affirming love and gratitude before embracing eternal peace.
At 23, Robert joined Allison Transmission in Indianapolis amid widespread discrimination, yet his relentless work ethic, charm, and perseverance won over skeptics during a 35-year tenure. Dubbed 'Bobcat,' he demonstrated how determination could shift perspectives and build lasting respect in challenging environments.
Family & Loved Ones
Cherished moments with loved ones defined Robert's world, from grilling and gardening alongside kin to fishing trips and travels that wove unbreakable threads of joy. He poured generosity into his children—David (Paula), Robert Jr. (LaShanda), and Donna (Paul)—along with nephews Clarence Griffin and Daryl Jones, plus a sprawling circle of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. His straightforward counsel, often delivered with tough love, stemmed from a fierce desire for their success, always paired with readiness to offer whatever was needed.
Remembered by Friends & Family
Echoes from Robert's circle capture a man whose straight-talking wisdom and generous heart left ripples of admiration across generations, with shared tales underscoring his role as a steadfast pillar in tough times.
