From his early days in East Chicago, Indiana, Bob embraced life's challenges with humor and tenacity. Born to Hugh and Edith Vore, he shared close bonds with sisters Ellen, Louise, and Clarice. Graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1942, he briefly attended Indiana University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. His path took him through medical training at DePauw University and service as a corpsman at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, followed by surgical residency completed in 1950. During the Korean War, he served as a general surgeon aboard the hospital ship Repose. Returning to Indianapolis, he honed his skills in anesthesia, rising to assistant head of the program at IU Wishard before a long tenure at Methodist and Community Hospitals until retirement in 2004.
Bob's medical career spanned decades of frontline service and innovation in anesthesia. From Navy corpsman to wartime surgeon on the Repose, he later shaped anesthesia programs at key Indianapolis hospitals, providing compassionate care at Community Hospital for nearly five decades until 2004, embodying hard work and expertise that saved and improved countless lives.
