Life & Legacy

Mark Henry Schoop built a remarkable life marked by entrepreneurial drive, unwavering family bonds, and a passion for bringing people together through food, golf, and generous hospitality.

Born in Chicago to Allen and Martha Schoop, Mark grew up in Hammond, Indiana, where he forged lifelong connections at St. Paul's Lutheran School among classmates and teachers he cherished. A 1963 graduate of Hammond High School, he stepped into the family business at Schoop's Hamburgers, transforming it from a local spot into a nationwide favorite after taking the reins early following his father's passing. Beyond business, Mark thrived on hosting gatherings, whipping up meals with flair, and perfecting his swing on the golf course as a dedicated member of Woodmar Country Club and the Western Golf Association. His adventures spanned Northwest Indiana, Rochester, and Vero Beach, Florida, filled with travels alongside close-knit friend groups and joyful family escapes to the lake or sunny spring breaks.

Mark's bold vision turned his father's modest hamburger restaurant into a coast-to-coast chain, creating jobs and delighting customers with consistent quality. His leadership not only preserved a family legacy but expanded it, while his generosity shone through support for causes like the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation.

Family & Loved Ones

Mark's world revolved around the enduring partnership he shared with high school sweetheart Lois, whom he wed in 1969, nurturing a home filled with two devoted children, Julie Wemhoff and Adam Schoop, plus four energetic grandsons—Connor, Carter, Tyler, and Trevor. His warmth extended to siblings like brother David and his wife Annelie in Sioux City, Iowa, sister Martha Krop in Griffith, and cherished in-laws including Diane Gleason with Jon in Crown Point and John Lindstrom with Linda in Naperville, all enriched by his knack for heartfelt hospitality and readiness to offer aid.
