Life & Legacy
Larry Seabrook Landis crafted a remarkable journey marked by sharp intellect, steadfast public service, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear, leaving an indelible mark on Indiana's civic fabric and beyond.
Entering the world in Princeton, New Jersey, mere weeks after World War II concluded, Larry grew up in Goshen, Indiana, alongside sisters Carolyn and Pam. His early years sparked a profound curiosity, evident in visits to his grandparents' farm and hands-on work in his Aunt Peg's genetics lab at Bucknell University. A standout at Goshen High School's Class of 1963, he excelled in band on trumpet, science and math clubs, and penned 'The Tattered Briefcase' column from his trusty briefcase. At Wabash College, a full academic scholarship fueled his cum laude graduation in Political Science and Economics in 1967, enriched by Phi Kappa Psi brotherhood. Doctoral pursuits at UNC Chapel Hill paused for Army service, setting the stage for a multifaceted path blending politics, business innovation, and regulatory wisdom.
Larry's professional arc shone with public service zeal, starting in Indiana campaigns for Bill Ruckelshaus, Bill Salin, and Virginia Blankenbaker, then as inaugural paid staff for Richard Lugar's transformative Indianapolis mayoral bid. Three decades in marketing, advertising, and communications followed, with key roles at firms and American Fletcher National Bank, culminating in founding Marketrends and American Grassroots. Later, 11 years on the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission—appointed thrice by Governors O'Bannon and Daniels—earned acclaim for his balanced insight amid tech revolutions. His NARUC efforts on national broadband policy advanced universal digital access, shaping modern connectivity.

Family & Loved Ones
Cherished traditions wove through Larry's days, from meeting Carol Butz at Garrison, Jasper, Rose & Company—where her brilliance left him awestruck—to their 50-year union sealed on September 28, 1974, at Epworth Methodist Church. Together they nurtured son Christopher (Heather) and delighted in granddaughters Lauren, Anna, and Emily, rarely missing their milestones while sharing state park Thanksgivings and Lake Tippecanoe retreats. Faith anchored them at St. Luke's United Methodist Church through Christian Endeavors and his later Disciple Bible Study teaching, whose notes endure in Roberts Park archives. His eclectic pursuits—amateur filmmaking, coin collecting, photography, history, politics, and live music patronage—paired with generous support for Indiana Historical Society, Heartland Film Festival, Wabash College, Indiana 211, Amputee Coalition, Citizen's Action Coalition, and political hopefuls. Enduring health trials with wry humor and endless inquiry, Larry connected deeply until his final days. Preceded by parents Donald and Sally, wife Carol, in-laws Paul and Louise Butz, brother-in-law Bruce Butz, and niece Susan Butz; survived by son and daughter-in-law, granddaughters, sisters Pam (Gary) Bollier and Carolyn (Rick) Guipe, plus nephews and nieces.
