Life & Legacy
Judith E. 'Judy' Buffington crafted a vibrant life of artistry, horticultural passion, and community involvement, leaving behind gardens of beauty and connections that bloomed across generations.
From her early days in Danville, Illinois, Judy shone as a high school standout, earning the title of Miss Red Gloves in her senior year—a honor that supported local charities. Her creative spirit flourished through watercolor painting, where she garnered local and regional accolades for her evocative works. This same artistic flair extended to her expertise as a Master Gardener, transforming ordinary spaces into stunning landscapes that inspired everyone around her. In 1976, she relocated to Indianapolis with her first husband Tom Budd and their two children, Philip and Barbara, forging deep roots in a new community filled with enduring friendships.
Judy's professional path blended design and service. She began as an interior designer at Sandusky's Furniture store in Danville, enhancing countless homes with her keen eye. Later, in Indianapolis, she dedicated 20 years as a bank teller at Chase Bank, retiring in 2004. Beyond paid roles, her volunteer efforts enriched cultural life through the Women's Junior Group of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and hands-on support at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Active in Second Presbyterian Church, she wove her talents into the fabric of her surroundings.
Family & Loved Ones
Judy's world revolved around nurturing bonds that spanned decades, from her children Philip Budd and Barbara E. (Tim) Campbell to grandchildren Douglas Campbell, Victoria (Connor) Doherty, and Madeleine Budd, plus great-granddaughter Keira Doherty. She shared a devoted partnership with her late first husband Tom Budd and later with Philip R. 'Phil' Buffington. Her sibling connections remained strong with sister Faith Meece and brother Frederick 'Pat' Prettyman, all enriched by her gentle encouragement and flair for turning everyday moments into cherished keepsakes.
Remembered by Friends & Family
Tributes from admirers capture Judy's essence as a beacon of creativity and kindness, with many recalling her gardens as living testaments to her generous spirit and the way she cultivated joy in others.
