From his early days in Indiana, Joe embraced a path of dedication and discovery. A proud 1977 alumnus of Whiteland High School, he channeled his energy into protecting others before immersing himself in the evolving world of technology. His curiosity extended to the open road and the lessons of the past, fostering connections that enriched every chapter of his journey.
Joe's commitment to public safety shone through his tenure as a firefighter with the City of Franklin and as a Deputy Sheriff for the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, where he honed his skills at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1988. Later, he transitioned into Information Technology, blending professional expertise with his enthusiasm for computer games, while always prioritizing the well-being of those he served.

Joe's world revolved around the joy of shared adventures and quiet moments with those closest to him, from cross-state Harley rides alongside his wife Barbara and daughter to summer explorations of museums and battlefields that ignited a mutual fascination with history. A devoted husband, father to Kathryn (Zachary) Smith, Steven (Amy) Tirsway, and Tamie (Rob) Caulk, and grandfather to Ivie, Tyde, Isla, Lauren, Alyssia, Jaxen, and Karlee, he treasured every chance to create lasting memories. His warmth extended to sister Lori (Mike) Sims, and despite the loss of his older brother Benjamin, Joe remained a steadfast brother, uncle, and guiding presence to nieces and nephews including Micheal Milton, Carol Milton, Matthew Clark, Andrew (Sarah) Clark, Kaitlyn (Santo) Borrello, and Erik Sims.
