Born in the small town of Avondale, North Carolina, Janice developed an early passion for basketball that propelled her to statewide fame as part of the Chase High School Girls Basketball Team, securing a North Carolina State Championship. After marrying her high school sweetheart Mickey Guffey in 1966, she built a fulfilling life together spanning nearly six decades. Her days were enriched by tending gardens, immersing herself in music, and cheering on sports teams, with a special affinity for the UNC Tarheels and the Indiana Fever—particularly captivated by Caitlyn Clark's rise. An avid animal lover, she doted on her cherished pet Baxter as if he were family.
Janice dedicated years to the banking sector, culminating in her retirement from Key Bank in 2011. Beyond her professional role, she co-founded Enduring Communications, establishing WEPB-LP as a vital non-profit community radio station that strengthened local connections.
