Raised on the southside of Indianapolis by parents Frances Whitner and Rozell Cheatham, James grew into a man of determination and community roots. Shortly after high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Army, honoring his country with dedication. Returning home, he channeled his vision into launching Che Che Magazine, a testament to his innovative drive. His path later led to a meaningful career at Wishard Hospital, where he found not only professional fulfillment but also the love of his life, Emma Louise Gaston. Their 38-year marriage became the cornerstone of a vibrant family life filled with shared adventures.

- James shared 38 cherished years with his wife, Emma Cheatham, creating a loving home surrounded by children, grandchildren, and extended kin. He delighted in bowling leagues, card games, fishing outings, casino visits, and heartfelt gatherings with friends, always radiating enthusiasm and camaraderie. Preceded in death by his parents Frances and Rozell, sons Javon Bertram and Jaraughn Bertram, and daughter Kimberly Bolden, he is lovingly remembered by wife Emma; sons James Cheatham Jr. (Denise), Jamie Gaston (Deborah), Michael Cheatham (Tish), Jaylin Bertram, Jayden Bertram, and Rondell Smith; daughter Tiffany Bentley (Robert); 20 grandchildren including Leah Bolden, LaNesha Tabb (David), Ocketa Cheatham, and James Cheatham (Megan); plus a wide circle of family and friends.
