Born to John and Lucille (Boggs) Thorpe, Harris grew up as a lifelong resident of Decatur Township, forging deep roots in his hometown. A proud graduate of Decatur Central High School in 1949, he took on the role of business manager for his senior class, showcasing early leadership skills. His sense of duty led him to serve in the Korean War during 1952 and 1953. Throughout his days, Harris pursued passions that brought him peace and camaraderie, from tending to his cherished Model A Ford to nurturing his faith within local congregations.

Harris devoted 44 years to Indianapolis Power and Light, excelling in underground and system operations before retiring in 1994. Beyond his technical expertise, he stepped up as president of the Young Men's Forum and Conservation Clubs, channeling his energy into fostering group initiatives and environmental stewardship.

Harris shared 65 years of marriage with Judith C. Soladine, whom he wed on September 25, 1954, building a foundation of unwavering companionship. Their union blessed them with three children—H. Allen (Denyse) Thorpe, Jill (Marc) Kirchoff, and Mark (Peyton) Thorpe—along with three grandchildren, Jonathan Kirchoff, Julia Thorpe, and Jessie Money, plus two great-grandchildren. A devoted Paw-Paw, he relished trips to visit extended kin in Kentucky and California, where his patient stories and easy laughter wove enduring family threads. Though he was predeceased by his parents, wife, and brother Louis M. Thorpe, his quiet strength continues to anchor those he held dear.
