Life & Legacy

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, and embraced through adoption by Vivian and Janice Collins, Eleanor's early years blossomed in North Charleston. A graduate of St. Andrews High School, she pursued her passion for science at the College of Charleston, earning a biology degree. There, she found her soulmate in Charles, marrying him in 1960 amid dreams of adventure ahead. Their journey wove through Charlottesville, Virginia, and Wheaton, Maryland, as Charles advanced his medical career and served in the Army. In 1971, they planted roots in Indianapolis, establishing their cherished Carmel home on Maple Crest Drive in 1974—a haven that remained their sanctuary for decades.

Family & Loved Ones

Eleanor Frances Carter, R.N.'s legacy lives on through their family and loved ones:

  • The heart of Eleanor's world was her family and their lively home, always brimming with children, pets, and strays of every kind—especially her beloved large orange cats. She supported her children's pursuits as a steadfast Carmel Band Aid volunteer for the marching band and with the Garfield Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. Survived by children Charles Benjamin Carter Jr., M.D. (Stephanie), Allyson Ashby Carter, Geoffrey Richard Carter, and Christopher Stuart Carter; and grandchildren Benjamin Bryant, Harrison Reese, McLean Stuart, and Lily Frances. She was preceded by her husband Charles in 2019.
