His ambition sharpened toward dentistry at Indiana University in Indianapolis, where he honed skills that would define his path. Returning to Evansville, he established a thriving practice on the east side before embracing his deeper passion for mentorship at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. There, as a full-time clinical instructor, he guided countless students toward their professional dreams, earning accolades for his exceptional guidance. Beyond the classroom, Steven savored spirited IU basketball and football games, weekend adventures scouting new cars, and above all, irreplaceable time with his expanding family.

Steven's professional journey peaked as a beloved clinical instructor at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, where he transitioned from private practice to full-time teaching. His innovative methods and compassionate approach earned him multiple awards, while his influence helped numerous students achieve their dentistry aspirations, fostering a new generation of skilled professionals.

His 36-year marriage to Patricia Stanich Dixon anchored these bonds, alongside close ties to son William Michael Murphy, daughter Deborah Kay Murphy, granddaughter Samantha Barnes (with Evan), great-grandchildren Aria Grace Murphy, Cora and Olivia Collins, Norah Jean, Elijah James, and Gemmah Rose Barnes, and brothers-in-law Steve (Kristine) Stanich, Gary (Kim) Stanich, and Alan (Jeanne) Stanich. He also held dear the special companionship of Alysa and Christian Collins. Preceded by his parents Mary and Emory Dixon, in-laws Mike and Dorothy Stanich, and grandson Gage Elijah Murphy, Steven's gentle guidance and ready enthusiasm made every family encounter memorable.
