Raised in Anderson in a close-knit General Motors family, Bonnie grew up alongside sisters Maxine and Mollie, and brother Charlie, the cherished daughter of Charles Jackson Smith and Mary June Watson. From her earliest days, she embodied resilience and determination, qualities that propelled her through every challenge. Whether diving into the depths as a scuba enthusiast, conquering the Grand Canyon's trails, or taking the stage as an actress and stage manager with Indianapolis Civic Theater, Bonnie refused to let any barrier dim her vibrant enthusiasm for life.

- Bonnie's greatest joy was her role as a devoted mother and grandmother, fiercely protective and endlessly loving toward her sons Nathan (Brandy), Timothy (Carrie), and Christopher (Zeida), as well as grandchildren Presley and Jolie. She shared her wisdom on enduring trials with grace and celebrating triumphs fully. Her commitments extended to guiding new mothers as a La Leche League leader, offering spiritual support as a Stephen Minister in her church, and raising funds for the Gennesaret Free Clinic serving the homeless. She found lasting companionship with her second husband, Michael, and cherished her surviving sister Mollie.
