Life & Legacy

Bhagwan (B.C.) Patel built a remarkable life of ingenuity, athletic drive, and unwavering family commitment, leaving an enduring mark on his community through engineering triumphs and cultural contributions.

From his early days in Navsari, India, as the second youngest among 11 siblings, Bhagwan balanced labor in the family enterprise with standout achievements in school and athletics. Arriving in Chicago in 1960, he earned his civil engineering credentials at Chicago Technical College before settling in Indianapolis in 1962 to launch his professional journey. A self-driven learner, he channeled his family's business acumen into founding VS Engineering, Inc., in 1980 from his home basement, expanding to a westside office the following year—a venture that flourishes still. His competitive edge shone on fields and courts, mastering cricket, kabaddi, and tennis, while he fostered Midwest cricket leagues and shared tennis lessons with his kids. Rooted in a musical lineage, Bhagwan mastered the harmonium, accordion, and Taishōgoto on his own, performing alongside his brothers and wife Hansa at Diwali festivities, religious gatherings, and community events, weaving bonds through melody.

Bhagwan's civil engineering prowess stemmed from relentless skill-building, culminating in the 1980 establishment of VS Engineering, Inc. What began humbly in his basement evolved into a lasting westside Indianapolis firm, embodying his entrepreneurial heritage and technical mastery while creating pathways for others.

Family & Loved Ones

Cherished moments with loved ones defined Bhagwan's days, as he and Hansa opened their doors to newcomers from India, offering shelter and support during their American transitions. He credited her steadfast backing for fueling his business vision and opportunities for those around them. With his children, Vandana (Robert Gloyeske) and Sanjay (Cathy Patel), he poured endless energy into top-tier education, lessons in diligence and perseverance, and modeling family as life's true anchor. As Dada to grandsons Nikhil Gloyeske, Niyan Patel, and Rajan Gloyeske, his affection flowed through homemade seekh kabobs, spirited games of cards and chess, and devoted attendance at their soccer, basketball, track, and music pursuits—proving through his own path that determination unlocks any goal. He was preceded by his parents, five brothers, and four sisters, and leaves behind brother Dhansukh (Niru) Patel, plus numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and kin.
