Life & Legacy
Anne Marie Hendrickson crafted a life rich with family devotion, educational passion, and resilient joy, leaving an indelible mark on her Carmel community through decades of warmth, hospitality, and unwavering faith.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Thomas and Catherine Forlenza, Anne Marie savored her childhood amid Jersey Shore summers, lively Italian family meals, cousin adventures, and exciting New York City excursions. A cherished highlight was catching the Beatles live in her high school days, a tale she shared with pride. Educated in Catholic schools, she contributed to the yearbook at Bishop Walsh High School before earning her diploma from Southern Regional High School in 1966. Venturing to Murray State University in Kentucky, she embraced newfound independence, adopted local speech patterns, and discovered enduring love with Alan during her junior year. After graduating with a degree in education, she launched her teaching journey in Bardwell, Kentucky, where her first-grade classroom sparked lasting inspiration. The couple wed in 1971 on a joyful Jersey beach, then settled briefly in West Lafayette, Indiana, before thriving in Stevensville, Michigan, where their first child arrived. In 1977, they planted roots in Carmel, Indiana, expanding their family with three more children amid neighborhood moves and heartfelt home-building. A devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church, Anne fostered deep connections through faith, school, and community ties. Her generous spirit welcomed everyone, fueling involvement in kids' sports, performances, farm outings in Brookston, and van trips to Florida. In 2001, a heart transplant granted her renewed vitality, celebrated annually as her 'second birthday,' complete with bonds formed with her donor family. Anne relished reading, book clubs, cheering Alan's guitar sessions, winter escapes to Seacrest Beach for sunset gazing, and cooking favorites like spaghetti sauce, meatballs, mac and cheese, and baked beans for her growing clan.
Anne's educational fervor shone early as a first-grade teacher at Bardwell Schools in Kentucky, shaping young minds with profound influence. Later, as Executive Director of the Carmel Dad's Club for over a decade, she strengthened community ties and family programs. Even in later years, her substitute teaching in the Carmel Clay School System continued to motivate students, reflecting her lifelong commitment to nurturing growth and learning.
